Stress & Anxiety
Type As are prone to anxiety, pure and simple. Our ambitious, energetic, and controlling natures predispose us to problems with nervousness, anxiety, and even panic attacks. And since anxiety and depression are such “close cousins,” many Type As also experience an occasional bout of the blues, or worse.
However, there exist many well-developed methods for greatly improving your ability to cope with these illnesses so you can have a better quality of life.
My background and interest in anxiety and depression are, unfortunately, more than just academic. I have been a lifelong sufferer from anxiety. My anxiety and panic attacks began at the age of about seven, when I would awake in the middle of the night in extreme anxiety and panic, sometimes now referred to as “night terrors.” When I was in my late teens and early twenties, when psychological disorders tend to bloom, I had severe panic attacks for several years. All through my work life I struggled with anxiety, which occasionally manifested itself as generalized anxiety disorder, in which circumstance you are basically anxious about everything (life). Also, during my early retirement I had an episode of severe depression, which I later learned runs in my mother’s side of our family.
I have read scores of books on the subjects of anxiety and depression and spent countless hours in therapy. I have undertaken it as a key part of my life’s work to understand these psychological and emotional disorders in as fundamental and thorough a manner as possible. I have hundreds of pages of notes, scribblings, and learnings which may at some point form the basis for another book I will author.
There are many simple concepts that can take much of the “bite” out of anxiety and depression. The Feeling Wheel is a great tool for understanding and improving your mood and there are easy ways to quickly and effectively overcome a panic attack. There is no time like the present to start feeling better and begin finding more joy in your life!
