I’m Most Likely Going to Hell in a Handbasket—Are You?

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 5:5

Whenever I read this passage in the Bible I think to myself, “Oh boy, I’m screwed.” There are a lot of qualities I can try to claim, but meek has never been one of them. So I’ve always just figured off to hell I’ll go.

But wait! I recently learned that different versions of the Bible have varying interpretations of this passage. Since the Bible was written in Latin, it needs to be translated into English. I might be saved yet!

The New American Bible states, “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Nope, still headed south.

The New Living Translation Bible says, “Blessed are the humble, for they shall inherit the earth.”

This is a little better for me, but I still think I’m going to be roasted.

So I decided to look to other sections of the Bible, ones that possibly place more value on my particular qualities, in the hope that I’ll have an argument for entry into the pearly gates.

“Blessed are the righteous” – Yes, I can be righteous. Even indignant at times! But that’s probably not what they mean.

“Blessed are the lowly” – Nope, I’ll be headed down under. I probably progressed too high in the business world to be considered lowly.

“Blessed are the wicked, for they know not what they do” – I’m wicked, and I have no idea whatsoever what I’m doing. Finally, I think I’ve found a sure way in!

Yippeee!
