timTim McIntyre retired in 2004 at age forty-six from his position as president of Applied Systems after facilitating a successful sale of the large and profitable software company. At this crossroads in his life, he made the unusual decision to fully retire from his career to pursue other interests and simply enjoy free time. As a highly ambitious and energetic Type A personality, this turned out to be an unexpectedly significant challenge. After a lot of mistakes and setbacks, he eventually developed a system of concepts and detailed steps that allowed him to fully enjoy being retired. He chose to share this roadmap with other Type As by authoring I’m a Type A – How the Heck Will I Ever Retire? McIntyre’s book can help even the most energetic Type A personality learn how to positively anticipate, easily transition into, and truly enjoy the retirement phase of their life.

McIntyre earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame (magna cum laude) and an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago, and is a CPA and Certified Cash Manager (Top Scorer Award). He worked at Ernst & Young and Deloitte (two of the “Big Four” public accounting firms), Inland Steel Industries, Taco Bell Corporation, and Applied Systems. McIntyre’s career culminated with being named Applied Systems’ Chief Financial Officer in 1998 and President & Chief Operating Officer in 2000. Upon the sale of the company in 2004, he elected to retire.

McIntyre has struggled with anxiety his entire adult life. He also experienced a severe episode of depression late in life. He has read scores of books on these subjects and has made it part of his life’s work to deeply and fundamentally understand these mental illnesses so he can provide useful tips to help others cope and more fully enjoy life. I’m a Type A – How the Heck Will I Ever Retire? addresses the issue of anxiety as experienced by pre-retirees and retirees.

McIntyre lives in Illinois with his wife Elaine. He has two adult children, Jennifer and Chris. He is a self-taught Christian who has read the entire Bible several times. He is also a Certified Personal Trainer and amateur bodybuilder. McIntyre does extensive volunteer work, both at local hospitals and as a pro bono financial planner for family and friends.
